Stories of HopeWILLIAM: William, Yolanda and their four children have benefited from our community and educational programs at New Harbor Vista in Wilmington since 2002. Recently William was laid off and was nervous that he’d be limited in finding a job with only a high school education. With the help of Abode Communities staff, he prepared a professional resume and completed an extensive online application for an inventory clerk position. We are happy to report that William has now been offered a job earning six dollars an hour more than his previous job paid. He is thrilled he will be able to more fully provide for his family.
Rebeca: When Rebeca applied for an Abode Communities College Scholarship in early 2009, she was maintaining a 4.33 G.P.A. in a rigorous Honors and AP program at California High School in Whittier. Through what her English teacher called an "intense work ethic," Rebeca's dream came true as she graduated as California High School's Class of 2009 Valedictorian in a class of 615 students. Rebeca is the oldest in a family of seven and with limited income, paying for college was going to be difficult. Thanks in part to her $10,000 Abode Communities Scholarship, Rebeca is now in her first semester at the University of California, Santa Cruz, pursuing her goal of becoming a teacher.
SYBIL: Sybil's daughter lives in Downey, and she would pass by Heritage Court each day as it was under construction, hoping that once it was completed Sybil could find a home there. Sybil lived more than 35 miles away from her daughter, and while she visited her often, being close to her family became more important as she got older. Happily, Sybil was one of the very first residents of Heritage Court, our affordable community exclusively for seniors, and has been there since it opened in 2001. She has many friends, takes advantage of the recreation and health programs offered by Abode Resident Services and her daughter and her three grandchildren are just minutes away.
