Individuals and families who are in need of service-enhanced affordable housing like those developments owned and operated by Abode Communities are frequently struggling to overcome serious economic and social disadvantages. Often times, these households are rent burdened, spending well more than 30% of their annual income on rent, which leaves little remaining resources for basic needs such as food, medical care, transportation, and child care.

At Abode Communities, we work to address the disparity between income and housing affordability for a wide range of low-, minimum- and living-wage professionals such as janitors, child- care providers, bank tellers, nurses’ aides, security guards, retail clerks and truck drivers—individuals whose skills we rely upon daily, but whose incomes are simply not enough to pay rent on most apartment units in California. Resident demographics include families, senior citizens, the working poor, single parents, formerly homeless individuals, persons at-risk of homelessness, and other special needs populations such as Transition Age Youth, survivors of domestic violence, and the mentally/physically disabled.

By doing so, our work:

Stabilizes Housing

[Residents move less often and have improved financial resources for basic needs such as nutrition, transportation, healthcare, and childcare]

Strengthens Communities

[Property values increase by eliminating blight and the accompanying wide range of urban issues such as high crime rates, graffiti, and trash]

Enhances Livelihoods

[Residents improve self-sufficiency and increase opportunities for upward mobility through complimentary onsite resident (social) services]

Improves Economic Opportunity

[Residents benefit from affordable housing co-located with education, healthcare, and childcare in areas adjacent to mass transit]

Fosters Community Connectivity

[On-site staff members collaborate with residents, local law enforcement, neighborhood councils, community groups, and small businesses to advance community-wide initiatives]

Promotes Environmental Sustainability

[Improve resident health outcomes, reduce tenant utility costs, and bring open, secure green space to urban environments]
