Environmental Sustainability
Sustainability is more than just achieving the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) rigorous design standards. At Abode Communities, we believe it’s about creating linkages within and around our communities, advancing social justice for underserved populations, and creating healthy environments where all people are given equal opportunities to thrive.
We are a pioneer in the creation of environmentally sustainable affordable housing, having designed the first constructed LEED Platinum affordable housing development in the County of Los Angeles. Our studio’s sustainable innovations include the incorporation of a ground source heat pump, as well as gray water system to retain, filter and reuse discharged water from a common laundry facility to feed drought-tolerant landscaping, both firsts in the County of Los Angeles. For nearly a decade, we’ve continued to build our laboratory of innovation, having successfully achieved eight LEED certifications on a variety of projects, six of which achieved the highest level, Platinum.
