Clark Residence
The historic Mary Andrews Clark Residence was built in 1913 as a YWCA by William A. Clark (1839–1925), the copper magnate after whom Clark County, Nevada was named. In 1987, the building suffered catastrophic damage as a result of the Whittier Narrows Earthquake, rendering it inhabitable.
Abode Communities acquired and rehabilitated the property in 1990, transitioning the historic structure from a YWCA to 152 Single Room Occupancy units for low-income households living in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. In 2026, Abode Communities will undergo another major rehabilitation and renovation, transitioning the existing 152 SRO units to 107 affordable studio homes to enhance the quality of life for residents.
Clark Residence is registered on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated monument by the Cultural Commission of the City of Los Angeles.
